Closing the Charleston Loophole

In 2015, Dylann Roof entered Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina and joined a bible study. At the end of the bible study when worshipers bowed their heads in prayers, he opened fire, killing 9 innocent people. Roof was able to get his gun despite not having received a cleared background check. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn has been working tirelessly since that day to close that so called "Charleston Loophole" and allow authorities the time they need to process gun background checks.

This video was part of a larger social media campaign to spark awareness about the Charleston Loophole and the accompanying legislation. On March 11, 2021, the legislation passed on the floor of the House and is currently awaiting a vote in the Senate. The video received over 35,000 views on Twitter and was shared widely by other members of Congress and third party organizations. #CharlestonLoophole trended on Twitter on March 11 as well in the Washington, DC area.

Ultimately this video helped spread awareness and helped deliver the message Whip Clyburn was trying to achieve by closing the Charleston Loophole.
